Have you felt embarrassed because you didn’t know a knitting term? Does it sound like a different language when knitters speak about their projects and lives as knitters?
Have you tried to search the world wide web to find out what S – E – X meant in knitting terms only to want to gouge out your eyes? You are not alone!
As a non-native speaker of English, I’ve tried to look up some strange things in my dictionary over the years.
Two Kinds of Knitting Terms
There are major types of knitting terms. One is colloquial knitting terms or how knitters speak about their knitting. The other is pattern terms or how patterns talk about knitting.
In this guide, we’ll take an in-depth look at the first – how knitters talk about their knitting life.
I have attempted to make this guide exhaustive, but knitting terms are a moving and ever-evolving target. That’s why I’m committed to updating this ebook whenever I discover a new term and I’ll make sure you get the updated version for free.
Why you should listen to me
I can’t recall my life pre-knitting.
Knitting needles and yarn have been part of my life since my grandmother taught me to knit before I had turned four-years-old.
I’ve spent a couple of years working in a yarn store while I was at university and now I’m blogging and podcasting about knitting as well as designing my own patterns.
As a complete language geek (I’ve learned 8 languages in total so far), I’ve studied the way knitters talk about their knitting lives since before Ravelry came on the scene. That’s before 2007, which honestly makes me feel a little old.
I’ve compiled all my knowledge into this exhaustive guide to knitting terms.
Never wonder what a knitting term means again!

Praise and Reviews
This was an excellent e-book!
I am not a knitter, so pretty much all of it was new to me. Some of the acronyms are hilarious! Not only did Pia give informative descriptions of the terms, she did it in a very humorous way!
I never expected to read a book about knitting terms and laugh.
It was wonderful to read about her background in knitting. I look forward to reading more of Pia’s writing, and can’t wait to try out some patterns!

What This Book Does For You
Saves you from embarrassing moments. Do you wish you could wash your eyes with soap after you looked up the acronym S – E – X & knitting? It’s not a pretty sight… Do you hate having to ask people what they mean when everyone else seems clued in? If so, then this book is for you.
Helps you understand knitting terms in relation to each other and how to use them. Do you understand some knitting terms but feel like you aren’t using them right? Do you ever find yourself wondering what the difference is between pooling and puddling and why it’s different from flashing? Understanding what a term means on its own is one thing. Being able to use it correctly, especially in relation to other terms is what will make you sound and feel like a confident member of the cool knitters’ club.
Saves you time and energy. Do you want to spend less time researching knitting terms and more time knitting? Don’t waste any more time and energy looking for this information on your own! I’ve spent over 13 years doing the research and compiling the information into this book. If you come across a term that’s not in the book just shoot me an email and I’ll figure it out for you.
Maybe You’re Thinking…
I’m sure could do this on my own. Probably, but ask yourself, have you? Have you spent the time combing through all the partial lists out there, put them together, alphabetised them, defined them in a way that makes sense to you while making you laugh and cross-referenced them? If you have then this book isn’t for you.
It’s too much money. Well, it’s not free. But how much do you get paid per hour? And how many hours would you waste trying to find all this information on your own? The price of this book is well worth the time it saves you.
I’m pretty sure I know them all already. Well, in that case, do you like laughing? Then this book is for you. Do you know someone who’s totally new to knitting? Then get the book for them. Do you have a bunch of knitting friends you get together with? Buy the book and turn it into a drinking game as you have to explain every single term, but don’t forget a lifeline when you KUI.
So are you ready to feel confident you’re using over 50 knitting terms correctly?
